HELP!!! My lungs are still congested!?

I had a cold over a month ago, but my lungs are still congested. I am wheezing and have some mucus that comes up every now and then. The doctor i saw a month ago said anti biotics were not necessary but that I should take a steroid, but I would like to avoid doing that. Can anyone help me please!
