Artificial/Synthetic gr in a rat cage?

I've just bought a rat cage which has 2 levels of wire shelves as well as the bottom tray (I'm removing the wire floor). I was wondering if anyone knew if it would be ok to use the artificial gr mat stuff as a cover because all I've really been hearing is that I should use cardboard or fleece and fleece can get expensive while cardboard doesn't look as nice.
