Why Does A Church Chose To Separate From It's Founding Denominational Affiliation?

I'm interested in this because a church I considered joining had made that choice within the past 3 years. I would like to ask someone at the church, but of course me asking this will be viewed through very hypocritical and sensitive lenses. Does anyone know about this phenomenon and why some churches chose to relinquish their denominational affiliation. (i.e. going from say C.O.G.I.C to non-denominational) ?
